Historian Georges Coedès notes that this massive water storage system was a crucial component of the empire's agricultural prosperity. By 900, the Khmer Empire had built several large reservoirs, including the West Baray, which still exists today.
What Everyone Knows
Most people think that the ancient Khmer Empire's achievements were limited to its impressive temple complexes, such as Angkor Wat. The standard story goes that these temples were the center of the empire's power and culture, while the rest of the infrastructure was relatively undeveloped. However, this perspective overlooks the sophisticated water management systems that supported the empire's agriculture and population growth. Historian Michael Vickery argues that the Khmer Empire's water system was a key factor in its success, but this aspect of its history is often overlooked.
What History Actually Shows
Historian Bernard-Philippe Groslier actively researched the Khmer Empire's water system, and his book "Angkor: Hommes et Pierres" provides valuable insights into the construction and management of these reservoirs. According to Groslier, the East Baray reservoir was completed by 900, and it held approximately 50 million cubic meters of water. The West Baray reservoir, built during the reign of King Udayadityavarman II in 1050, held around 45 million cubic meters of water, which is more than the Great Pyramid of Giza's volume of 41 million cubic meters. By 1150, the Khmer Empire had built several other large reservoirs, including the Trapeang Thma reservoir, which was used for irrigation and fishing. Historian Henri Mouhot notes that these reservoirs were not just used for agricultural purposes, but also played a crucial role in the empire's urban planning and architecture. The Khmer Empire's water system was a complex network of canals, dams, and reservoirs that supported a large and densely populated urban center. As historian Charles Higham actively demonstrates, the construction of these water systems required a high degree of engineering skill and organizational capability, which challenges the common perception of the Khmer Empire as a primitive or unsophisticated society. By 1200, the Khmer Empire's water system had reached its peak, with a total of five large reservoirs and numerous smaller canals and dams. The complexity and scale of this system are a testament to the ingenuity and skill of the Khmer Empire's engineers and rulers, who were able to design and build a system that supported a large and prosperous population.
The Part That Got Buried
Historians like Georges Coedès and Louis Finot actively contributed to the suppression of this story by focusing on the artistic and religious achievements of the Khmer Empire, while overlooking its impressive engineering feats. The French colonial administration, which ruled Cambodia from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century, also played a significant role in downplaying the significance of the Khmer water system. They were more interested in exploiting Cambodia's natural resources and promoting their own cultural heritage, rather than recognizing the achievements of the Khmer people. As a result, the story of the Khmer water system was not included in the historical records and educational materials used in Cambodia during the colonial period. This deliberate omission had a lasting impact on the way Cambodian history is perceived and taught, with the water system being relegated to a footnote in the country's history. The decision to prioritize the preservation of ancient temples over the study of the water system also meant that many of the records and artifacts related to the system were lost or destroyed.
The Ripple Effect
The construction of the Khmer water system had a direct impact on the development of modern irrigation systems in Cambodia. The use of reservoirs and canals to manage water resources allowed for the cultivation of rice and other crops, which in turn supported the growth of the population and the economy. Today, the Tonle Sap Lake, which was an integral part of the Khmer water system, remains a vital source of fish and other aquatic resources for the people of Cambodia. The lake's floodplain, which is nourished by the water from the lake, is also an important agricultural area, producing a significant portion of the country's rice crop. The preservation of this ecosystem is a direct result of the engineering skills and foresight of the Khmer kings, who built a water system that has stood the test of time.
