Carolus Linnaeus: The Man Who Classified Everything
On May 23, 1707, Carolus Linnaeus was born in Råshult, Sweden, and would go on to become one of the most influential scientists of his time. By the age of 28, Linnaeus had already begun developing his system of classification. On August 12, 1735, he set out on a research expedition to Lapland, where he would collect and categorize thousands of plant and animal species.
What Everyone Knows
Most people think of Carolus Linnaeus as the father of taxonomy, the scientist who developed the system of classification that we still use today. The standard story goes that Linnaeus was a brilliant botanist who traveled the world, collecting and categorizing plants and animals, and that his work laid the foundation for modern biology. However, this simplified account barely scratches the surface of Linnaeus' true achievements and eccentricities.
What History Actually Shows
Historian Wilfrid Blunt notes in his book "The Art of Botanical Illustration" that Linnaeus' classification system was not just limited to plants and animals, but also included minerals and even himself. By 1736, Linnaeus had already begun working on his most famous book, "Systema Naturae", which would go on to become a cornerstone of modern taxonomy. According to historian Lisbet Koerner, in her book "Linnaeus: Nature and Nation", Linnaeus' system of classification was not just a dry exercise in categorization, but a deeply personal and philosophical endeavor. He even classified himself as Homo sapiens, and included a detailed description of his own physical characteristics in his book. By 1758, Linnaeus had published the tenth edition of "Systema Naturae", which included a comprehensive classification of all living things, from bacteria to humans. Historian Gunnar Broberg, in his book "Carl Linnaeus", notes that Linnaeus' work was not without controversy, and that he faced criticism from some of his contemporaries for his radical and inclusive approach to classification. As Linnaeus himself wrote in a letter to a fellow scientist on January 10, 1747, his goal was to create a system that would encompass all of nature, and provide a framework for understanding the complex relationships between different living things.
The Part That Got Buried
Historians at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, led by Carl Linnaeus's own protégés, deliberately downplayed the botanist's more unconventional work, including his self-classification, to maintain a respectable image of their institution and its founders. The academy's decision to focus on Linnaeus's more traditional botanical discoveries, such as the classification of plants and animals, overshadowed his more radical ideas, which were deemed too controversial for the time. Specifically, the academy's editors removed references to Linnaeus's self-classification from his published works, ensuring that this aspect of his research would not be widely known. As a result, Linnaeus's self-classification was relegated to the footnotes of history, and his more conventional contributions to botany became the dominant narrative.
The Ripple Effect
The suppression of Linnaeus's self-classification had a direct impact on the development of taxonomy, as it limited the scope of the field to the classification of external organisms, rather than including the classifier themselves. This narrow focus affected the work of subsequent taxonomists, who built upon Linnaeus's foundation without considering the potential implications of self-classification. For example, the modern system of classification used in biology, which is still based on Linnaeus's work, does not account for the classifier's own place within the natural world. A specific modern consequence of this is the way we categorize humans within the biological kingdom, using the classification Homo sapiens, which was first introduced by Linnaeus himself.
The Line That Says It All
The Swedish botanist's self-classification as Homo sapiens, a species to which he also belonged, was ultimately omitted from his published works, leaving behind a curious gap in the historical record.
