By 1792, Jenner had begun experimenting with cowpox, testing its effects on animals and humans. On May 14, 1796, he administered the first vaccination to James Phipps, using material from a cowpox lesion on the hand of a milkmaid named Sarah Nelmes. The fact that Jenner's initial vaccine was not a single, unified product, but rather a collection of different preparations, each with its own unique characteristics, is often overlooked. The widespread adoption of vaccination led to a significant decrease in the number of smallpox cases, which in turn changed the way cities were designed, with less emphasis on quarantine stations and more on public health infrastructure. The people most affected by this change were the urban poor, who were previously disproportionately affected by outbreaks of the disease.
