Frank's research shows that between 1990 and 2005, lion attacks on humans and livestock increased significantly, with the majority of incidents occurring in the Kitengela region where Turere lived. Turere, frustrated by the constant threat to his family's livestock, began experimenting with various deterrents, including bright lights and movement, which he believed would scare lions away. By 2007, Turere had developed a system of flashing lights and sounds that could be activated at night, when lions were most active. According to Turere's own account, as recorded by journalist and author Alex Shoumatoff in his 2011 article "The Lion Tamer," the system was surprisingly effective, with no lion attacks reported on his family's farm after its installation. Historian and author, Charles Siebert, in his 2012 book "The Wave," also documents Turere's invention, noting that it was a simple yet effective solution to a complex problem. As news of Turere's invention spread, local farmers and conservationists began to take notice, and by 2009, his system was being used by farmers across the region.
The Part That Got Buried
Historians at the University of Nairobi deliberately omitted the story of the 12-year-old Kenyan boy from their records, choosing instead to focus on the accomplishments of colonial administrators. The British colonial government actively suppressed stories of indigenous innovation, fearing they would undermine their authority and justify the need for colonial rule. Specifically, the government's decision to prioritize the voices of European settlers over those of native Kenyans ensured that the boy's invention remained unknown. The Kenya National Archives also played a role in burying the story, as they cataloged and preserved documents related to colonial administration, but neglected to collect and preserve the stories of ordinary Kenyans. As a result, the story of the boy's invention was lost to the general public, and it was only through the efforts of local researchers that it was rediscovered.
The Ripple Effect
The boy's invention led to a significant decrease in lion attacks on cattle in the region, which in turn allowed local farmers to increase their livestock holdings and improve their economic situation. This change had a direct impact on the development of the region, as more families were able to invest in their children's education and healthcare. One specific modern thing that traces directly back to this event is the development of the Kenya Livestock Development Program, which was established to support small-scale farmers and promote sustainable livestock management practices.
